USA Kummooyeh Federation

Bringing centuries of Korean sword tradition to America — rooted in history, practiced today.

Our story

The USA Kummooyeh Federation was established in 2023 as part of a worldwide expansion by the World Kummooyeh Federation, based in South Korea. Our mission is simple: to share the art of Korean sword and weapon systems with American students in their most authentic, traditional form.

The World Kummooyeh Federation spent years carefully restoring Kummooyeh; drawing directly from ancient techniques and the Muye Dobo Tongji, a Korean military martial arts manual published in 1790 during the Joseon Dynasty. This landmark text documented eighteen to twenty-four weapon systems and serves as the foundation of everything we teach.

The Muye Dobo Tongji (무예도보통지) is one of the most important records of traditional Korean martial arts ever compiled. Its documented weapons systems form the core curriculum of Kummooyeh.

What is Kummooyeh?

Kummooyeh — loosely translated as "sword martial arts" — is a traditional Korean discipline with deep historical and cultural roots. For centuries, Koreans have revered the sword not only as a weapon, but as a symbol of protection against misfortune and a representation of personal virtue.

The word "Kum" refers to the sword itself. While single-edged blades are technically called Do and double-edged blades are called Kum, the terms are used interchangeably — and any martial art that uses a sword can be called Kummooyeh.

Weapon systems

Kummooyeh draws from a rich set of weapons documented in the Muye Dobo Tongji. Our training is heavily influenced by the Yedo (sharp sword), Deungpae (shield), and Woldo (moon blade) systems, as well as archery.

This is Kummooyeh.
